As anyone who knows me knows, I am a automation consultant in both Word and Excel. I make my living trying to make it easier for the average office worker to do certain types of data entry/correlation/analysis and word processing. I commonly do this in Word and Excel because most businesses use these pieces of software. So, of course, when Office 2011 (correction 2010) came out I had to get a copy because I have clients who use it.

*sigh*

If someone at Microsoft is trying to damage their market share, they are doing a bang-up job.

Between the "ribbon", one of THE MOST counter-intuitive pieces of schlock I have EVER had to deal with and what they have done to the Security settings for macros, I really cannot, in good conscience advise my clients to use this iteration.

One caveat with regard to the "ribbon". They HAVE added the ability to create your own ribbon tabs and groups. This would be great, except for the aforementioned change with regard to the Macro Security settings.

Nowhere under the Macro Settings Section of the "Trust Center" is there an option to let me (or my clients) chose whether or not to enable macros at run-time the way there was in Office 2000 and Office 2003. No. Now the choices are:

  • Disable all macros without notification

  • Disable all macros with notification

  • Disable all macros except digitally signed macros

  • Enable all macros (not recommended; potentially dangerous code can run



As you can see, unless I can afford $200 to $500 a year to get a properly recognized digital signature, my creating individualized macro applications for my clients is pretty well hosed.

To say that I am unhappy to to understate my mood right now.

Shows how irritated I was when I originally posted this that I did not catch the mistyping of Office 2010 as Office 2011. *sigh*
